PCB Glossary & Abbreviations

A practical reference for the language used in PCB design, fabrication, assembly and project review.

01
Find the termSearch the name or its meaning
02
Check the contextDesign, fabrication or assembly
03
Clarify the requirementA definition is not a specification
01 / Start with the requirement

Use the term.
Then define the requirement.

Shared terminology makes a project easier to discuss, but a short definition never replaces the drawing or acceptance specification.

Search below by acronym, full name or meaning. The explanations are written for practical project communication; the normative wording in an applicable standard or approved customer specification remains controlling.

One exact unit conversion: 1 mil = 0.001 inch = 0.0254 mm. Confirm the unit before comparing a drawing dimension or manufacturing rule.

03 / Frequently confused

Similar words. Different questions.

01

DFM, DFA and DFT

Can this design be manufactured? Can it be assembled? Can it be tested? A review should identify which of these scopes it actually covers.

02

Tg, melting range and process peak

These describe a material transition, an alloy property and a manufacturing condition. They are not interchangeable temperature limits.

03

Lead-free, RoHS and halogen-free

These labels address different material or regulatory questions. Define the scope and supporting evidence for each one you require.

Practical answers

Questions before
you release the design.

Use these answers to clarify the specification, then resolve project-specific requirements with your manufacturing and assembly teams.

Does this glossary define manufacturing acceptance limits?

No. It explains vocabulary. Dimensions, tolerances, classes, sampling and test methods must be specified in the approved project documents.

Why do some abbreviations have more than one meaning?

Technical abbreviations are context-dependent. For example, “SMD” can describe a device or pad-definition method. Expand the abbreviation in critical drawing notes.

Is Gerber just a picture of the copper?

Gerber can convey layer images and attributes, and its job data can carry fabrication characteristics. Confirm the complete data package and supported format with the manufacturer.
