PCB Panelization Guidelines
Plan the delivered PCB array around assembly handling, component clearance and a controlled separation process. Compare panel approaches and estimate a simple rectangular array before the engineering review.
The delivered array is part of the assembly plan.
A panel drawing should explain how individual boards will be handled, populated and separated—not just how many fit in a rectangle.
A customer or assembly panel contains boards supplied together for downstream processing. Rails can provide room for tooling holes and fiducials while helping small boards move through assembly.
Distinguish that delivered array from the fabricator’s larger production panel. Ask which layout you are approving and whether the quotation quantity refers to individual boards or complete arrays.
Match the panel approach to the board.

| Approach | Where to discuss it | Items to resolve |
|---|---|---|
| V-scoring | Straight shared separation lines and compatible board geometry. | Confirm score paths, remaining material, board thickness and component clearance. Standard through-scoring crosses the full panel; do not assume stop-scoring is available. |
| Routed tabs | Profiles that need routed contours, retained by selected tabs. | Agree routing gaps, tab locations, perforation pattern where used, edge residue and the supported separation process. |
| Combined routing & scoring | A design where straight separation lines coexist with routed features. | Make the routing and score information explicit, including clearance where the processes interact. |
| Individual boards / carrier | A project where a shared breakaway array is not the preferred delivery format. | Discuss alternative handling or carrier requirements with the assembler before fixing the fabrication output. |
Coordinate the features outside the board.
Rails and handling edges
Ask the assembler which edges need rails, what clearances must remain free and how the array will be supported. Rail dimensions are equipment- and project-dependent, not a universal rule.
Tooling and fiducial plan
List the required tooling holes and alignment marks on the panel drawing. State the array orientation and avoid letting multiple teams independently add conflicting features.
Components beyond the outline
Check the populated envelope, including edge connectors. Board-to-board gaps may need to accommodate overhanging components rather than only the bare-board routing tool.
Support during processing
Review large unsupported spans and areas carrying heavy parts. Evaluate support together with rail and tab placement before assuming that a dense array will stay stable during assembly.
Separation access and sequence
Identify the intended depaneling method, tool approach and sequence. Mark sensitive regions for review and agree what finished-edge condition is acceptable after separation.
Array data ownership
Decide whether to submit already-panelized data or a single-board file with a requested arrangement. Approve the resulting panel drawing and record which party owns subsequent changes.
Check the overall dimensions before review.
Estimate the array envelope.
This calculator repeats identical rectangular boards in aligned rows and columns. Enter the gap between finished board outlines. Each outer margin is the total distance from the outermost board outline to the panel edge.
Panel height = R × H + (R − 1) × Gy + 2 × My
Boards per array = C × R
Margin interpretation: Mx and My include any routing clearance next to the outermost board plus the remaining rail material. They are not automatically the width of the solid rail alone.
The calculation excludes non-rectangular nesting, rotation, extra internal supports, process coupons, scoring feasibility, material yield and assembly-machine limits. Zero gap is only a geometric input; it does not approve a shared score line.

6 boards per array · 79.53% rectangular area utilization
Area utilization = total board-rectangle area ÷ panel-rectangle area. This is not manufacturing yield or a quote.
Make the panel drawing unambiguous.
- 01
Define the array
State the single-board revision, board count, orientation, array dimensions and whether mixed designs are included.
- 02
Define the geometry
Identify rail margins, board gaps, profile routing, score lines and proposed separation features. Keep board and array dimensions distinct.
- 03
Define the process
List required tooling and alignment features, overhanging parts, keepouts and the intended assembly and separation sequence.
- 04
Approve the final data
Compare the panel drawing and fabrication output. Confirm quantity units and any proposed changes before the build is released.
A step-and-repeat arrangement and its frame are separate design choices; panel-editing tools make these parameters explicit, but the physical process still needs review.
Panelization release checklist.
Use this as a personal release check. A checkmark records your review, not manufacturer approval.

Frequently asked questions
Check the design, files and manufacturing requirements before sending your next board for production.
Is a customer panel the same as a fabrication panel?
Not necessarily. A customer panel is the delivered array used for downstream handling. The fabricator may arrange one or more such arrays in a larger production panel. State which one the supplied drawing and quantities describe.
Is a zero board-to-board gap always suitable for V-scoring?
No. A zero gap can describe a shared score line geometrically, but scoring feasibility depends on the actual geometry and process. Confirm copper and component clearance, thickness and score requirements with the manufacturer.
How wide should the rails be?
Use the assembly equipment, tooling and support requirements for this project. The calculator’s margin inputs are illustrative and include the total distance from the outer board outline to the panel edge.
Can boards with edge connectors be panelized?
They can be considered, but the populated outline may extend beyond the board edge. Include that overhang when reviewing board gaps, rails and separation access.
Does higher calculated utilization mean a lower production cost?
Not by itself. The result only compares rectangular areas. Handling, routing, support, assembly throughput, depaneling and the fabricator’s production layout are not modeled by this calculator.
